Ulf Puder: Imagined Cities and the Architecture of Memory

Ulf Puder is a German painter known for his enigmatic architectural landscapes that sit somewhere between reality and imagination. Born in Leipzig, Germany, in 1958, Puder studied painting at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst (Academy of Fine Arts) in Leipzig, one of Germany’s most historically significant art academies. The school has produced several influential painters associated with the internationally recognised New Leipzig School, a loose movement of artists who revived figurative painting in Germany following reunification.

Working primarily in oil on canvas, Puder constructs complex spatial environments populated by fragmented buildings, staircases, towers, bridges, and industrial structures. His compositions rarely depict identifiable locations. Instead they operate as psychological landscapes where architecture becomes a vehicle for atmosphere, memory, and quiet narrative tension. Surfaces are often built up through layered paint handling, creating a balance between structural precision and painterly abstraction.

Puder’s paintings frequently evoke deserted urban settings suspended in an ambiguous moment of time. Structures appear partially collapsed, unfinished, or reconfigured into improbable arrangements, giving the scenes a dreamlike quality. Light and shadow play a central role in shaping these spaces, while muted palettes of greys, ochres, and dusty blues reinforce the sense of stillness and introspection that characterises his work.

Since the 1990s Puder has exhibited extensively across Europe and internationally, with numerous solo exhibitions in Germany and abroad. His work has been widely collected and is held in several public and private collections, including the Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig.

Today Ulf Puder continues to live and work in Leipzig, contributing to the ongoing legacy of contemporary German painting through his distinctive vision of architectural space and atmospheric narrative.
