Works on Paper

Drawing was fundamental to Brett Whiteley’s practice. It was a means of observation and experimentation, underpinning the development of his paintings, sculpture and graphic work. The immediacy of paper allowed Whiteley to explore the subjects that continually occupied him, particularly the landscape and harbour surrounding his home at Lavender Bay.

The importance of these works remains evident at the Brett Whiteley Studio, where drawings and works on paper are presented alongside his paintings as an integral part of his artistic practice.

Sydney Harbour Bridge, 1977 belongs firmly within this important period. Executed as a line etching and open bite in an edition of 60, it brings together several of Whiteley’s most recognisable Sydney motifs, including the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and the harbour itself. The subject of the Sydney Harbour Bridge recurs throughout Whiteley’s work and is specifically recognised as a persistent theme in the Brett Whiteley Catalogue Raisonné.
