Lavender Bay

In 1970, Brett and Wendy Whiteley moved to Lavender Bay, beginning one of the most important and enduring periods of the artist’s career. From his home overlooking Sydney Harbour, Whiteley returned repeatedly to the view before him, recording its changing light, weather and atmosphere across paintings, drawings and prints.

The significance of the subject is beautifully illustrated at the Brett Whiteley Studio today, where Lavender Bay in the rain, 1981, is held in the Studio Collection. Executed in oil and synthetic polymer paint on canvas on hardboard, the work demonstrates Whiteley’s continued exploration of the harbour landscape and, in particular, its transformation through rain.

Lavender Bay in the Rain, 1987, revisits this familiar territory through screenprint. Its restrained palette, delicate silhouettes and fluid marks reduce the harbour to atmosphere and memory, creating one of Whiteley’s quieter and more lyrical interpretations of Lavender Bay.
