Notes:
Painted in 2015, The Boy with Flowers belongs to an important period in James Drinkwater’s practice, characterised by energetic mark-making, layered surfaces and a highly personal approach to abstraction and figuration.
The composition is built through a dense accumulation of painted, drawn and gestural elements. Areas of ochre, yellow, blue, black and white overlap and interrupt one another, while fragments of line and form suggest figures, architecture and landscape without resolving into a conventional narrative. The work retains the immediacy of drawing, despite the physicality of its painted surface.
Drinkwater’s paintings from this period frequently move between memory, place and lived experience. In The Boy with Flowers, the title provides a figurative point of entry into what initially appears abstract, encouraging the viewer to search through the layered composition for traces of the figure and its surrounding environment.
At 80 × 64 cm, the work is relatively intimate in scale for Drinkwater, concentrating the vigorous handling and visual density associated with his larger paintings into a compact format.
